Services

Optometric Equipment, models, skulls and other equipment

Optometric equipment and human anatomical models are available for checkout but cannot be loaned out for more than three hours.

Reference

Library staff members are always available to assist. ICO librarians can guide you in searching the ICO Library catalogs, journals, digital content, and databases to which we subscribe. The focus of ICO Library is vision science material, but ICO librarians can help locate other medical and more general information. We also provide research, citation and homework help. Ask a librarian!

Reserves

Physical copies of reserve books are available for checkout for a maximum of three hours. Renewals are not permitted on this material. Some reserve books are also available via R2 Digital Library. For log-in information, see the side-bar on my.ico.edu/library

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services

If there is something that you cannot locate within our collection, ask a librarian for assistance. If the book or article is not found in the ICO Library, the Library will borrow it when possible.

Computers

There are 15 computers located around the atrium on the second floor, and four on the first floor of the Library for general student use. Two of the first-floor computers are available for guest use. All guests must have prior permission from the Library Director to use the ICO Library. A multi-function printer/scanner/copier/fax machine is also available on each floor. College-related work always takes precedence over other activities. Please see a member of the Library staff with questions.

Issues beyond basic troubleshooting should be referred to the IS Helpdesk, by calling ext. 7500 or emailing support@ico.edu. The College policy regarding blocked websites is available from the ICO IS department.

Gifts/Donations

Non-monetary gifts and donations are accepted by the ICO Library by prior arrangement only. Please contact the ICO Library Director prior to dropping off or shipping material.

Off-Campus Access to Library Resources

All current students, faculty, and employees have off-campus access to the same Library resources that are available on campus by logging into the my.ico.edu portal. When prompted, enter the off-campus user ID and password, visible in a side-bar on the Library page after logging in.

Externship Students

ICO students on externship have the same privileges as other students, with some additional accommodations. Students who are located at least 50 miles from ICO will receive the following privileges within the confines of current federal copyright laws and guidelines. Contact Library staff with questions or for additional information.

  • Full-text material available electronically can be accessed off-campus; use the off-campus instructions listed above.
  • Reserve items cannot be loaned to externship students. Some reserves are available as e-books, which may be accessed off-campus.
  • Access to VisionCite and PubMed is provided at no charge.
  • Reference services are provided upon request. Ask a librarian.
  • Scans of articles available in print-only journals can be emailed as PDF documents upon request.
  • Books that have been borrowed may be mailed back to the College at the student's expense; material must be sent via an insured carrier.
  • Extended loans of books from the regular circulating for externship students will be at the discretion of the Library Director.

Alumni

ICO alumni have library privileges for life, with access to the ICO Library’s catalog available 24/7. ICO Library staff members can assist with your research requests, and can mail/email articles from ICO’s, or other collections, to you at no charge. (Remote access to some digital content is limited due to our site licenses. Please feel free to contact the library directly for fulfillment options.) In order to use the ICO Library's print resources, you can either visit the library in person, or request them from the library using the interlibrary loan services of your local library. Material is loaned to you, again, at no charge to you.

Alumni are able to view ICO’s digitized yearbooks, which are available on the Library website. Deeply discounted subscriptions to VisionCite are also available to you. We love our alumni!
